"I Want To Teach"

Lesson 4, Memory Work

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” (Hosea 4:6)

We, as GOD’s people, do not have to fall into the above category. Our children can be saved from this destruction and we can make it happen!

Children are like little sponges. It is difficult to challenge them more than they are able to perform when it comes to memorizing the word of GOD. GOD has given them fresh and willing minds to soak up His Word. Remember, planting ‘the seed’ in good soil brings forth good fruit. (Matthew 13:8) There is no better soil than a young child’s heart! It is never too early to start teaching GOD’s Word to our children. It is not necessary to ‘cram’ it down their throats. If the word is constantly on our hearts and minds as we deal with the child it will be a natural occurrence that they will absorb it.

It has been said that the Catholics claim that if “they have a child from birth until they are 5 years old, they will always be a Catholic.” It is true that the first years of life are the most formidable. We cannot afford to lose that precious time in our children’s lives. Never tell a child ‘you can’t memorize, this is too hard for you”. Encourage them to do the best they can and they will surprise you. Please pray for wisdom as you choose memory work for the young souls in your charge.

Learning GOD’s Word is the most important thing your students can do. It is our job to motivate our students to desire to gain all the knowledge they can. It is great to memorize verses. This will stay with them for many years. Remember, we are planting the seed in the best soil possible. Planting the Word in these hearts will reap growth in the Kingdom for generations to come. However, there are many things to be memorized in addition to the verses. The following is a list of some of these items. What other Bible related items can you add to this list?

Make a sheet listing the specific items to be memorized. Then create pages with each item to be memorized on a single page: (i.e. Make a list of the sons of Jacob on a sheet). Hand out the sheets one at a time. Let the students go at their own pace in learning. Challenge 4th graders and up to learn ‘100’ memory verses in one quarter. They really can do it!! See the ‘Teacher’s Table’ page for more memory work charts and ideas.

Enjoy teaching the Word as you reap the joys of the knowledge gained by the children in your classes!
